Expected verdict against Suu Kyi in Myanmar postponed

The competent judge at the special court of the ruling military junta in Naypyidaw postponed the hearing of the case, in which Suu Kyi is accused of illegally importing and possessing radio equipment, to December 27, the AFP news agency learned from well-informed sources. Suu Kyi was deposed in February after a military coup. The now ruling junta covered them with a series of accusations. The allegation about the radios goes back to a house search during the coup. Security forces stormed her home and found her in possession of illegal equipment, according to the authorities.

According to AFP information, members of the security forces involved in the search later admitted that they did not have a search warrant. Nevertheless, the 76-year-old faces a prison sentence of up to three years in the case. Taken together, she faces decades of imprisonment for the various allegations.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate had already been sentenced to four years in prison at the beginning of December for inciting rioting against the military and violating corona requirements. The military junta reduced the prison term to two years a few hours later. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing announced that she will be under house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw.

The military coup in February ended a brief phase of democratization in Myanmar. Since then, protests have raged across the country, killing more than 1,300 people and arresting more than 10,000 in the crackdown.
