The senator and presidential candidate of Cabildo Abierto (CA), Guido Manini Ríoswarned that the current figures regarding public security are “unacceptable” and charged against the Ministry of Interior for ignoring the proposals that were presented by his party throughout the current government administration.
In an interview with Channel 10, the CA leader stated that many changes are needed in the strategies to combat crime that are being carried out in order to put an end to “the recreation of mischief” in the country.
“Recess is not completely over, there are still facts that allow us to say that recess is not over,” said the candidate in a reference to “recess is over”, a CA slogan used throughout the 2019 electoral campaign.
Manini Ríos explained that for his party, “in public security there are still unacceptable numbers for Uruguayans” and that they “deserve to live much better.”
“We made clear proposals that have not been considered”
Along the same lines, he pointed out against the Ministry of the Interior: “We have made clear proposals on public security that have not been executed, that have not been considered.”
“I myself have brought proposals to the minister (Jorge) Larrañagato the minister (Louise.) Heberto the Minister (Nicolás) Martinellito change the policies that are being carried out,” noted Manini Ríos.
Likewise, the lobby leader maintained that in addition to the Ministry of the Interior, the problem of unsafety must be looked at “integrally” and modifications must also be addressed from the prison systemwhich fails in rehabilitation, and the Justice. “There are different legs of this problem, everyone has to be up to the task,” the legislator said.
“Crimes are going down, but from scandalous numbers”
On the other hand, he commented that “in certain areas of the country it is a risk to go out at certain times of the day,” and although he acknowledged that crime numbers “went down,” they “are dropping from scandalous numbers” and from “something that was incredible what happened in the Uruguay“.
“The current numbers are unacceptable, there are fewer robberies than in the Frente Amplista era, yes, it is true, but they are unacceptable,” he pointed out in this regard.
