Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation spoke about the role of the EU in negotiations on security guarantees

The European Union could support NATO-Russia talks on security guarantees. Vladimir Chizhov, Russia’s permanent representative to the EU, said this in an interview with Izvestia.

“The European Union, as a generally non-military organization, can obviously play a supporting role in the negotiations, if any, on security guarantees. In general, of course, it will be necessary to speak with those countries – some of them are members of the European Union – on which the fate of European security depends to the greatest extent. We are ready for such a conversation, ”the diplomat noted.

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements with the United States and NATO on European security guarantees. These are the proposals of the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov conveyed to the US Deputy Secretary of State Karen Donfried during her visit to Moscow on December 15.

On December 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that after admission to NATO, weapons threatening Russia could be deployed in Ukraine. The head of state also expressed the hope that “all concerns about NATO expansion” will be heard.

“The situation is reminiscent of our not so distant Soviet past”
