A particular formulation of lavender oil not only helps against anxiety, but apparently also against mild to moderate depression. This is the result of an effectiveness study carried out by the Viennese psychiatrist Siegfried Kasper (Center for Brain Research at MedUni Vienna) with German and Swiss co-authors.
The scientists started a study with a total of 498 people who, according to the classification used internationally in psychiatry, suffered from mild to moderate depression. 170 patients were given the lavender oil preparation Silexan, 171 sufferers swallowed a tablet of a classic antidepressant once a day, and 157 test subjects were given a placebo. Neither patients nor doctors knew which subjects were in which group. The treatment duration was 56 days. After these eight weeks, the assessment was repeated. Those people who took the lavender oil supplement showed improvement compared to the placebo group. Patients who swallowed the antidepressant showed a comparable effect. Also significant was the ability of those treated to cope better with daily life.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has been known as a medicinal plant for centuries and has, among other things, calming properties. But what is important, according to researcher Siegfried Kasper, is the quality of lavender oil preparations. Oils from Lavandula angustifolia with a high ester content are suitable for producing preparations of pharmaceutical quality.
