The time seems ripe. SV Weng has never played in the district league in its 54-year history. Coach Kurt Aigner’s team is currently leading the table in the 1st Class Southwest with a nine-point lead and is well on its way to writing club history this season. Wenger won 14 of the 16 games so far. In the spring they have not lost any points and the Aigner team celebrated three wins in three games. The league leaders suffered their last defeat at the beginning of September. And yet the coach is still putting the brakes on the euphoria. “Even if it’s an oft-used phrase: we look from game to game. We’ve done well with that so far this season,” says Aigner.
Even the points lead mentioned, which grew due to the mistake made by pursuer Palting last weekend, is no reason for the successful coach to lean out of the window. “This points cushion can shrink just as quickly as it has grown. We will only look at another league when it is mathematically possible.” This humility is also one of the most important components of the Wenger recipe for success, said Aigner. “We don’t underestimate any opponent and we all pull together. That’s what makes us so strong.”
This attitude is complemented by a good age structure in the Wenger squad, which Aigner also sees as prepared for a possible premiere in the district league. “We have been focusing on continuity for several years and look closely at who we sign. That wouldn’t change in the district league either,” says the Wenger coach.
First of all, it’s important to do the homework that needs to be done. The next one is next Sunday at home against Waldzell. The ninth-placed team boosted their self-confidence with the 3-0 win in the derby against Pattigham, but from Wenger’s point of view they shouldn’t become a stumbling block on the way to the title. In the fall the game ended with a clear 5-1 win for the leaders.
“Pleasant feeling”
Union St. Roman also has a similarly comfortable points cushion as SV Weng over its first pursuers in the 1st Class Northwest. The lead over Neukirchen am Walde, currently second in the table, is six points. For the “Rominger” the current run of success is anything but self-evident; in recent years the Sauwaldkickers have usually been involved in the relegation battle until the end. “After the last few years, this situation is of course great,” says sports director Konrad Grömmer. For both his team and the spectators, it is “a pleasant feeling” to be among the top players in the league this year. But you don’t put any pressure on yourself in the Sauwald. “But you can never plan a championship title or promotion, it has to happen,” says Grömmer.
Last summer, a new trainer, Florian Hangler, was installed who successfully adapted the “Rominger” game system. According to Grömmer, the signing of midfield strategist Nicolas Husensky – who, among other things, played for Esternberg in the regional league – had an equally positive effect on the team. Especially in the evenly balanced 1st Northwest, the daily condition would often decide whether to win or lose, according to the sports director of the front runner. “We currently have that little bit of luck on our side that we’ve been missing from time to time in recent seasons.” If there really is a big coup in the end, not much would be changed in St. Roman. “The core of the team is young and of a good age. If the worst comes to the worst, we would have to talk to certain players about whether they want to continue on the path with us,” explains Grömmer.
The next step should be a win next Saturday against the latecomers in Schärding. Grömmer doesn’t want to talk about a mandatory win against the syndicate’s second team. “The games in Schärding are usually hot and closely contested. But of course we want to celebrate the next success.”
