When the marathon becomes a celebration for all of Linz

The starting signal for the 22nd Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon takes place on Sunday on the Voest Bridge.

Anyone who is out and about in Linz on the Danube these days will clearly notice the running atmosphere in the state capital. “One runner after the other is out and training during the day and sometimes at night. For Linz, the marathon is a real celebration with a great atmosphere that has become an integral part of the city,” says Deputy Mayor Karin Hörzing (SP).

On Sunday she will be taking part in the Generali 5-kilometer run with around 1,700 other participants – a distance that is new to the list of competitions this year. “This is a highlight and a number of kilometers that you can easily achieve,” says marathon coordinator Wolfgang Scheibner.

More than 16,700 participants are looking forward to the 22nd edition of the Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon. However, lacing up your running shoes and working on your form now is not beneficial, says marathon expert and race director Günther Weidlinger. “If you don’t have it in your legs now, you won’t be able to catch up until the marathon.”

Paramedics are prepared

Maximum temperatures of up to 28 degrees Celsius could cause problems for runners on Sunday. “Consume enough fluids so that you don’t start dehydrated,” is the tip from the marathon expert. “And of course take advantage of the refreshment points along the route – nine in total.”

Around 200 paramedics will be positioned around three kilometers apart along the marathon route on Sunday. “It’s a large ambulance service and we have enough staff on site to provide support. Of course, we want everyone to reach their destination in good shape – so drink enough,” says Mario Lindner, head of operations from the Red Cross.

The police also had around 200 officers on duty during the marathon weekend, says Heinz Oberauer, chief inspector of the traffic department of the Linz city police command. From 4 a.m. to noon, the A7, the Mühlkreisautobahn, will be closed between Prinz-Eugen-Straße and Treffling. “But I can assure you: There is a detour for every route,” says Oberauer.

“Symphony of Running”

The motivation for runners and spectators is increased by the many music groups and in the speed zones. “This year we organized a music mile in the Wasserwald, otherwise you would walk there completely alone for so long,” says Weidlinger. As an additional motivation, the “BrucknerBeats” – works by Anton Bruckner mixed with electronic music – by Linz DJ Pete Sabo will be played at the Quadrill Tower construction site at the intersection with Gruberstrasse. “This is also in keeping with the motto of the marathon: the entire weekend is a symphony of running – in combination with the 200th birthday of Anton Bruckner,” says Rene Esterbauer, commercial director of LIVA.

At the OÖN status On the main square there are free marathon alarm clocks for everyone and a competition with great prizes.

Traffic information

The Mühlkreisautobahn (A7) will be closed in both directions between the Prinz-Eugen-Straße and Treffling junctions on Sunday from 4 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The entrances and exits to Wiener Straße and Neue Welt/Salzburger Straße are also closed. After the Bindermichl enclosure, runners can leave towards Prague/Freistadt at the Prinz-Eugen-Straße/Industriezeile exit. The Ebelsberg bypass with a connection to the A7 or the Steyregger Bridge is passable.
