Last Tuesday night, the head of state held a closed-door meeting with more than 100 businessmen on the 40th floor of the World Trade Center Montevideolocated in the capital’s neighborhood of Buceo, where he spoke on current issues and the final stretch of the national government.


As reported by Telemundo, according to some voices present, the president maintained that the North American currency has the value it should have, thus denying a potential intervention in the exchange market by the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU) and he reflected: “We are all liberals until they touch our pockets.”
“What do you want, to lower people’s salaries?” he asked those present, referring to the objective of maintaining the low inflation during the remainder of the mandate, with a low exchange rate being one of the factors that help in this regard.
Likewise, he explained that from the meeting he held last Monday with the president of the BCU, Diego Labatand the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Azucena Arbelecheit was concluded that starting next week some measure may be taken that will not have a strong impact, but can be considered as “a signal” for the agro-export and industrial sectors.
“Leaving Mercosur was not an option”
At the international trade level, Lacalle Pou explained that there were limitations to signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Chinadue to the opposition that existed from the main partners of the South American bloc: Argentina and Brazil.
However, he acknowledged that “leaving the Mercosur “was not an option,” since Brazil is the country’s main trading partner after displacing China from first place.
