Patents: Upper Austria in first place nationwide

2,242 inventions were registered with the Austrian Patent Office in 2023, eleven more than in 2022. Once again, Upper Austria is in first place in a federal state comparison, ahead of Styria and Vienna with 506 patent applications. As in 2022 (with 470 patent applications), the most applications were recorded here. This emerges from the annual report of the Patent Office, which is published today.

The largest patent applicant at the domestic patent office is the Styrian automotive supplier AVL List with 211 registered inventions, followed by Julius Blum with 82 and Plasser & Theurer (headquartered in Vienna and main factory in Linz) with 31 registrations.

The most diligent applicant from Upper Austria was Engel Austria with 26 inventions. The manufacturer of injection molding machines from Schwertberg is in fourth place in the ranking. The Upper Austrian companies Miba eMobility GmbH as well as TGW Logistics Group and Trumpf Maschinen are also among the top ten.

When it comes to patenting climate-friendly technologies, Austria ranks sixth in the EU in terms of applications. Trademarks can also be protected by the patent office: “Strong brands are crucial for the success of goods and services. They are often targeted by copycats,” says Stefan Harasek, President of the Austrian Patent Office. Last year, 4,761 trademarks were registered, most of them by entrepreneurs from Vienna.
