One car derailed at around 10:30 a.m. on the border between Lower Austria and Styria, and another had its axle jump off the rails, said ÖBB spokesman Christopher Seif. No one was injured and a replacement bus service was set up between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag.
Rail replacement service on the S6
The set, which was en route from Italy to Bratislava, Slovakia, was not carrying any cargo. A local inspection should clarify whether the train can be put back on the tracks, said Seif: “We hope that a track can be opened again during the day.” The rail replacement service for long-distance trains was routed via the Semmering Expressway (S6).
Barrier for renovation measures
From Saturday to April 28th, the Semmering mountain route will be completely closed for renovation work. According to ÖBB information, around twelve kilometers of new tracks will be laid and 19 switches will be replaced. The renewal of protective structures between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag is also essential for safety along the connection. In a press release this year, the ÖBB estimated investments in Semmering at around 59 million euros.
During the duration of the work, there will be no trains on long-distance services between Wiener Neustadt and Mürzzuschlag and on local services between Neunkirchen and Mürzzuschlag. A replacement rail service with buses will be set up. Night trains are being rerouted.
