Unemployment in the Grieskirchen district rose by almost 44 percent in March year-on-year; in no other district in Upper Austria was the increase so high. Barbara Kundtner, head of the AMS Grieskirchen, explains this with the weakening construction industry and the reduction in leasing staff in the industrial companies in the district.
“Normally in previous years, those who had been registered with employment confirmation from the construction and construction-related industries were back in employment after Easter at the latest. This year we still have 242 people with us,” says Kundtner. In addition, the industrial companies in the district have reduced their leasing workforce, a trend that has been noticeable for several months. “The companies are making sure that they can keep their permanent staff. But for many there is a freeze on recruitment,” says Kundtner. But it also puts into perspective the high increase in the district, which has always been one of the top regions with low unemployment in recent years. “We are assuming a very low level of unemployment in March of the previous year of just 2.4 percent,” says Kundtner. There are currently 1,053 people registered as unemployed in the Grieskirchen district, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 3.4 percent.
The AMS Grieskirchen is currently focusing on people under 25. There are currently 122 registered unemployed people in this age group. “From day one, we have been providing support with job searches and have also increased the number of courses on offer,” says Kundtner.
In Wels, the unemployment figures are 22.8 percent higher than in March of the previous year, which is slightly higher than the state average of 20.8 percent. In Wels and Wels-Land, 4,257 people are registered as unemployed, 791 more than in the previous year. 1091 attend training and further education opportunities.
