The 21-year-old cook/waiter from Kremstal sustained life-threatening injuries. There was also the risk of losing a kidney.

However, the teams from the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Kirchdorf and Steyr reacted quickly. They saved the young man’s life and spared him a complex operation and possible lifelong consequences.

The medical team closed the bleeding vessel in the kidney with so-called coils. These are small metal coils that are inserted through a catheter through a puncture in the inguinal artery. Once they have reached the desired location in the vascular system, they roll up and close the affected vessel. This meant that 80 percent of Ölsinger’s kidney could be saved. Within a few days he was even able to be transferred to the normal ward, and he doesn’t have to expect any noticeable restrictions in his future life. “This patient story underlines the importance of teamwork in the medical field and shows that true miracles can happen through the collaboration of different specialist areas,” the clinic explained in a press release.
