The break-in, one of the largest in the city’s history, occurred on Easter Monday in the northern suburb of Sylmar, said David Cuellar of the Los Angeles Police Department on Thursday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the perpetrators broke in through the roof and cracked a safe.

The elaborate and complex theft appears to be the work of an experienced gang and was only discovered on Monday when the staff opened the safe, the newspaper reported, citing investigators. ABC News quoted a facility employee as saying it was “so unbelievable you would never suspect it.”

Like in Hollywood films

The crime is reminiscent of Hollywood films such as “Ocean’s Eleven”, but at the same time fits in with a number of actual break-ins in the region in recent years.

Two years ago, thieves stole up to $100 million worth of jewelry from a truck parked at a truck stop. In July, a man cut a hole in the ceiling of a high-end wine store near Venice Beach and stole $600,000 worth of Burgundy and Bordeaux wines.

According to the LA Times, the city’s largest-ever cash theft occurred in 1997, when $18.9 million was stolen from an armored cash vault. The thieves were caught.
