He plebiscite against the social security reform promoted by the PIT-CNT, which is in the final stretch of collecting signatures, is also a critical issue in the election campaign, whose greatest criticism focuses not only on the initiative itself but also on the pre-candidate of the Frente Amplio, Carolina Cosse. Her signature on the ballot first, and now her indeterminacy regarding whether she would vote in favor of the constitutional reform proposed by the union center put her at the center of the questions.
Cosse’s tone is more radical and aggressive than that of his main competitor in the internal Broad Front, Yamandu Orsi. That is its main difference at the level of political positioning and, in equal parts, its strength and disadvantage. Furthermore, it is a factor that places her as a frequent target of criticism from other candidates, who see in her confrontational attitude a perfect opportunity to mark their own positions.
In this framework, the plebiscite of PIT-CNT, a controversial topic in itself, became the axis of the discussion in the campaign that has the mayor of Montevideo in license use as the center of the questions. His decision to sign the ballot was already a source of controversy at the time—despite the fact that the mayor of Leap and precandidate Andres Lima adhered to the initiative, it did not have as much commotion as Cosse’s signature—; and now, the news that he still does not know if he will vote in favor in the eventual popular consultation generated a new wave of negative comments within the framework of the electoral dispute.
Delgado’s criticisms about the influence of “the most radical sectors”
One of the pre-candidates who, assiduously, points against the Frente Amplio and, mainly, cosse for the plebiscite of PIT-CNT and the relationship of the left coalition with the union center is Alvaro Delgado.
In this regard, the former Secretary of the Presidency, who is shaping up to be the candidate of the National Party In October, he once again demanded that the opposition take a firm position on the constitutional reform initiative, which “will surely” reach the necessary adhesions to be submitted to the popular consultation.
About the position of cosse, In particular, Delgado maintained that it is “doubly worrying.” On the one hand, because he is “speculating on making a decision based on an electoral issue.” In that sense, he pointed out that in the left coalition in general “they are waiting to pass the internal so that a decision that they should have already made does not have an electoral cost.”
This, in relation to the fact that the Wide Front They are torn between supporting an important union initiative – from the headquarters to which they have always been close – and against a reform that they have criticized; and encounter the risk of having to govern, eventually, with a fiscal situation suffocated by the security provisions that the PIT-CNT in the Constitution: reduction of the retirement age to 60 years, equalization of the minimum pension asset to the national minimum wage and the elimination of the AFAP and profit.
On the other hand, Delgado also pointed out that the decisions “are conditioned by the most radical sectors” within the opposition. “He Communist Party, Socialist Party and the PIT-CNT, who support her in this case Carolina Cosse, They have the decision to repeal the AFAP and confiscate the money of Uruguayans. I believe that, in that case, she tries to delay everything she can and hide her position,” she concluded.
Mieres questioned Cosse’s lack of position
“I signed because the proposal was from PIT-CNT and for the people to decide. They will have to reach the signatures, then a discussion process will begin and when it begins I will participate as another Uruguayan,” she explained. cosse by admitting that he has not yet made a decision regarding whether he will vote in favor of the eventual constitutional reform in matters of social security or not. And with those comments, he not only earned Delgado’s criticism, but also that of the head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) and candidate for Independent Party, Pablo Mieres.
“It strikes me that a person who aspires to be president in a few months is not clear about what to do in the face of something as clear, evident and important as nothing more and nothing less than eliminating the mixed regime, the AFAPs, putting in place the Constitution sets the retirement age,” the leader stated at a press conference.
“She has accused this government of being directionless and does not even have a position on such a relevant issue. “It seems worrying to me if she intends to be president in a few months,” she insisted.
