The goal of the now 12-year-old, who lost both legs in the attack, is to last at least one kilometer in the run on April 15, said her coach Anastassija Matijok in a Ukrainian television report.

“It was scary at first”

“At the beginning we ran 50 meters, then 100, 200 meters,” said Stepanenko in the report broadcast on Friday night. She trained for the marathon four times a week with special sports prostheses. “It was a little scary at first, falling or getting caught somewhere,” she recalled. Her participation in the race also serves a good cause: the girl is raising money for a sports prosthesis for an amputated Ukrainian soldier.

Next Monday marks the second anniversary of the Russian attack on Kramatorsk. On April 8, 2022, more than 50 people were killed and over 110 others were injured in the shelling of the train station, where many people were waiting to be evacuated. Stepanenko later received her prosthetics in the United States. She now lives with her mother, who was also injured in the attack, and her brother in Lviv, western Ukraine.

Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for more than two years. As a result of the hostilities, several hundred thousand people were killed. Tens of thousands of injured people had their arms or legs amputated.
