Researchers find membrane that supports embryo

Markus Hengstschläger, geneticist

A membrane that surrounds the embryo was characterized. The findings published in the journal “Developmental Cell” are the basis for further research with the aim of better understanding the causes of undesirable developments.

Around every second human embryo is affected by maldevelopment. This can result in it not being able to implant in the uterus or a miscarriage occurring. The causes of such undesirable developments have not yet been clarified, especially because research with human embryos is banned for ethical reasons in many countries around the world – including Austria.

Embryo model bred

Markus Hengstschläger, head of the Institute for Medical Genetics, and his team are one of the few laboratories in the world that have succeeded in producing so-called embryoids. Research can be carried out with these special stem cells. The scientists are now showing for the first time that the human model embryo itself produces a vital membrane. This membrane gives the embryo shape and stability, is responsible for the specification and organization of the embryo’s cells and allows it to grow in a controlled manner.
