López Obrador attacks the electoral authority for stopping the consultation to revoke his mandate

“It is unfortunate, it is painful, that the electoral body of our country instead of allowing facilities to oppose it,” he said during his usual morning conference.

The National Electoral Institute (INE) Last Friday it approved a resolution that temporarily halts preparations for this consultation, scheduled for next April 10, on the grounds of lack of resources to organize it.

“It cannot be that, arguing that they do not have a budget, they do not want to do the consultation, or that is what is being interpreted by their attitudes,” added López Obrador.

The leftist president affirmed that The INE has dedicated itself to “obstructing” the realization of the so-called mandate revocation consultation, one of his greatest political promises, “even without respecting the constitutional mandate in essence.”

“Here the fundamental thing is that the constitution requires that if the requirements established by law are met, a consultation must be carried out to make the method of revocation of the mandate a reality,” López Obrador added.

After announcing its decision, the INE reported that it will continue to review the signatures of citizens necessary to convene the consultation.

As of last week, 3.7 million signatures have been delivered, according to a civil organization sympathetic to the ruling Morena party.

Leaders of Morena have warned that they will appeal to the Federal Electoral Tribunal to challenge this decision of the INE.

The president recalled last week that the Supreme Court had already ruled that the revocation of the mandate complied with the constitutional precepts.

Three years after assuming power, López Obrador enjoys 64% public approval, according to a count of different polls published by the Oraculus site.

The INE has warned that the strong budget cut decided by the presidency and the Legislature for 2022 leaves it with scarce resources and therefore has presented a controversy before the Supreme Court.
