14-year-old crashes his stolen car into a light pole and tree in Vienna

A 14-year-old stole car keys in the cloakroom of a sports hall in Vienna-Meidling on Saturday afternoon, stole the car parked in front of it and took a joyride through the city. The vehicle owner was able to locate his car using the app. The teenager wanted to drive away from the police, who were soon on his heels. A light pole and a tree ended the escape, and the boy was slightly injured.

In addition to the car keys, the boy took other things such as a wallet from the locker room – the sports hall belongs to his former school. “When the vehicle owner came into the cloakroom and noticed the missing valuables, he called the police emergency number. The 55-year-old told the officers that he could locate his vehicle using the app. An immediate search for the vehicle was initiated,” said a police spokeswoman Julia Schick.

Large-scale search

Several district forces took part in the search. When the 14-year-old became aware of the police, he drove through the alleys, sometimes at excessive speed. In the Hohenbergstrasse area he lost control and crashed into a light pole and a tree. Even then he wanted to run away, but was stopped by the police after a short time.

The 14-year-old was provisionally arrested on suspicion of burglary and other offenses such as endangering physical safety. “The young person was subsequently taken to a hospital for outpatient care with the Vienna professional rescue service, but was released a short time later because he was only slightly injured,” said the spokeswoman. After his questioning, the Vienna public prosecutor’s office ordered him to be released.
