Green electricity: EU gave the green light for subsidies

Specifically, the competition watchdogs approved an aid scheme for this. According to the Commission, Austria should be able to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity supply to 100 percent over the year by 2030 “without unduly distorting competition in the domestic market”. The regulation is compatible with EU state aid law.

Austria had registered a planned subsidy scheme in Brussels to promote electricity from renewable sources (wind power, solar energy, hydropower, biomass and biogas). Aid is granted in the form of an additional premium: This consists of the difference between the average generation costs for the individual technologies and the electricity market price.

Also for foreign providers

If cooperation agreements are concluded with other countries, the regulation will also be opened for energy producers based abroad. The measure runs until 2030. By 2023, the payments are estimated to amount to 4.4 billion euros. Austria has set itself the goal of increasing the share of renewable electricity from currently 75 to 100 percent by 2030.
