Zelensky signs law on dual citizenship

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, December 20, signed a law that provides for multiple citizenship for ethnic Ukrainians living abroad. This follows from the information on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

“President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the law“ On Citizenship of Ukraine ”on the simplified acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship by foreigners and stateless persons who participated in the protection of the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine,” the Verkhovna Rada noted.

In early December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy introduced a bill on multiple citizenship for Ukrainians living abroad. At the same time, he clarified that Kiev cannot grant citizenship to all ethnic Ukrainians, since some of them live in “unfriendly countries,” including Russia.

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, has repeatedly expressed her opinion on the bill. So, on December 14, she criticized the provision of the bill, according to which a citizen of Ukraine cannot be a citizen of Russia.

Zakharova pointed out that for € 3,000, Ukrainian diplomats at the embassy in Lebanon issue a tourist visa to Syrians wishing to move to Europe, and also “help” cross the Syrian-Lebanese border. She also noted that Ukrainian officials help migrants to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, through which they receive a work visa to the European Union (EU) in a simplified manner.

On December 15, Zakharova said Ukraine’s dual citizenship bill was a manifestation of the worst practices of apartheid.

Zakharova also asked how the international community allowed such a phenomenon in a state that associates itself with the Western community. The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed that Moscow is closely following the legislative initiatives of the Ukrainian authorities, especially those concerning Russian compatriots.
