After the trial against a 50-year-old Kosovar had to be broken off on December 10th, the hearing in the regional court in Ried has now continued. As reported, the accused collapsed on the first day of the trial and was taken to the Ried hospital for clarification.
Public Prosecutor Alois Ebner accused the accused of numerous crimes of continued violence. He is said to have started beating, torturing, harassing and threatening his family as early as 2005.
Ebner described the 50-year-old as a “family and domestic tyrant”. Life within the family was characterized by violence and the alcoholism of the accused. “There was violence with iron bars, screwdrivers and kicks,” said the prosecutor. After his arrest in May 2021, the 50-year-old reportedly threatened his family with killing.
The defendant merely admitted to yelling at his family that the allegations of violence were untrue.
The psychiatric expert Adelheid Kastner diagnosed the defendant with a severe disorder that would justify admission to an institution for mentally abnormal lawbreakers. He was however responsible and guilty in his acts.
Long prison sentence
The jury found the Kosovars guilty as charged, including the crime of continued violence. The defendant was sentenced to eight years of unconditional imprisonment. In addition, placement in an institution for mentally abnormal lawbreakers was ordered. After the eight years of imprisonment, an annual check must be carried out to determine whether the man is still in danger. The guilty verdict is not yet final, the accused appealed for annulment, which will now be decided by the Supreme Court.
