Next major operation: Forest fire reignited in Upper Styria

The fire brigade and mountain rescue service are once again on a large scale.

Due to the high temperatures and the persistent wind, the fire was reignited on the Hanserkogel, which is difficult to access, the fire department reported. On Monday, six helicopters, firefighting forces and mountain rescue were in action again. One hopes that there will be no embers. A total of around 120 hectares of forest area have been affected since Easter Monday.

Wind and high temperatures

The emergency services were able to breathe a sigh of relief at the beginning of the weekend. “The fire was under control,” said Dominik Ganser from the Palfau volunteer fire department. On Saturday around 2 p.m., firefighters noticed smoke again while on fire watch. “The high temperatures were unfavorable,” said Ganser. Added to this was the persistent wind.

Mountain rescue secured firefighting forces

Three helicopters from the Federal Army, two helicopters from the Ministry of the Interior and one from a private company are supporting the fire-fighting work from the air. The helicopters dropped water from the air and brought the firefighters to the embers. The mountain rescue team secured the fire-fighting forces in the sloping terrain – “without a rope it would not be accessible,” said Ganser. “The entire mountain is enveloped in pockets of embers,” it was discovered during a morning drone flight on Monday. Since part of the area can be reached via a forest road, a hose line has now been installed.

No precipitation in sight

Ganser hoped that the firefighting work could be continued with the help of helicopters in the coming days. If the wind gets stronger again, they would have to stay on the ground. The wind is expected to last until Thursday with peaks of 50 kilometers per hour – as it did at the weekend, said Friedrich Wölfelmaier from Geosphere Austria. The foehn will ensure high temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius until Wednesday. No precipitation is in sight throughout the week. According to Ganser, there could be occasional stops on Hochschwab Straße (B24) on Monday. The Salza was closed to athletes.
