Even short hugs have a very positive effect

Parents’ touch is best for babies.

This was the result of an evaluation of more than 130 international studies by a research team from Bochum, Duisburg-Essen and Amsterdam. The results also show that shorter but more frequent touches are particularly beneficial. “It is not true that the longer the contact, the better,” says study author Julian Packheiser from the Ruhr University Bochum.

Both adults and children benefit from touch. “In the case of infants, it is important that it is the parents who do this. They have a better effect than those of carers,” reported Helena Hartmann from the University of Duisburg-Essen. “In adults, however, there are no differences between well-known people and professional staff.”

Less anxiety and depression

Studies have shown that the greatest effect of touch in adults is on mental state. Pain, depression and anxiety decreased significantly. They also had a positive effect on blood pressure and heart rate.

A study by the University of Basel about “patting on the back” in sports is currently providing similar results. As the Swiss scientists showed, basketball players are more likely to hit the basket during free throws if their teammates had touched them beforehand.
