A family of ducks chose a dangerous route for their Sunday excursion: the mother, followed by her nine chicks, got lost on the road at the Voralpenkreuz motorway junction. The risky walk came to a happy end thanks to two Asfinag traffic managers: The employees were informed about the feathered road users by the traffic management center in Wels. They discovered the frightened animals on the side of the road and quickly closed the affected lane.
Released into forest
The duo managed to carefully place the chicks in a trough and take them to the nearest escape route door. “The angry mother duck couldn’t be caught, but luckily followed her children in the trough,” Asfinag said on Monday. The chicks were released into a forest behind the noise barrier. Video footage shows them immediately waddling away with their mother.
“Heroes with Beards”
It is not the first animal rescue operation for which the two traffic managers are responsible: It was only at the end of March that the colleagues were celebrated on social media as “heroes with beards” after they rescued a stray cat from the A7 Niederhart tunnel.
