UN records a sharp increase in civilian deaths and injuries in Ukraine in March

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission has verified at least 604 civilians killed or injured in Ukraine in March, 20% more than the previous month.

The observers of the United Nations have recorded a sharp increase in the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine last month, due to the intensification of attacks by Russian forces, the entity’s Human Rights Office reported.

The figure includes at least 57 children killed or injured in March, double the number in February.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission has verified at least 604 civilians killed or injured in Ukraine in March, 20% more than the previous month.

Russian air strikes intensified throughout Ukraine

“The increase in civilian casualties in March was mainly due to attacks by the Russian armed forces throughout Ukraine and increased aerial bombardment near the front line,” the Rights Office stated.

The mission found that the majority of civilian casualties – 93.5% – as well as most of the damage to educational and health facilities and critical infrastructure occurred in government-controlled areas.

Ukraine suffered particularly intense attacks last month, and the president Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the country could run out of air defense missiles if Russia continues its intense long-range bombing campaign.

Last week he declared that Russia had fired more than 3,000 guided aerial bombs, 600 drones and 400 missiles at Ukraine in March.
