The Chamber of Fisheries Industries (ICPU) and the Chamber of Fishing Shipowners (CAPU) issued a statement accusing the State Insurance Bank (BSE) of “not very credible” and “incapable” of detecting false complaints in the workplace, in addition to questioning the “excessive” premium imposed on all workers in the sector who do not have the same risks.
The conflict within the fishing sector is going through a delicate moment, caused mainly by high operating costs. In that sense, for months they have been demanding a solution from the government and this time it was the turn of the BSE, based on the claim that the premium charged by the banking entity is not adequate to the needs and claims of the sector.
After three months of the penultimate claim directed by the president of the BSE, José Amorín Battlethe entity issued a statement in which they reiterate that “they maintain their absolute willingness to work together with both chambers in the search for alternatives that will reduce the accident rate and that will result in rate reductions.”
The statement signed by the manager of the Products Department, Andrés Cerruti, ensures that a report was prepared where the specific conditions of danger and occupational risks in fishing were analyzed. Within the study, it was concluded that there are various agents that “favor the risk of dependent workers suffering from musculoskeletal disorders”, as well as a lack of maintenance in the state of the fleet that harms the work process.
From the BSE they assure that these conditions “facilitate the generation of occupational diseases derived from the intensity of the rhythm.”
The response of the sector, outraged
One day after waiting for a response from BSE, CIPU and CAPU They issued a statement where, first of all, they reproach the delay on the part of the banking entity and the fact that it was signed by another person and not the president, who was the recipient of the first claim from the fishing unions.
On the other hand, they assured that the B.S.E. He was not interested in boarding any of the fishing vessels, so they do not understand where the information was obtained to prepare the report on the conditions of the sector. In that sense, they assured that they regret that the B.S.E. intends “from its monopolistic position and the greatest lack of knowledge of the diversity and complexity of the fishing sector, to discharge the responsibility of an excessive premium exclusively on the companies.”
This is the main claim by the sector that ensures that the premium on fishing vessels is more than triple. “Paying 10.24% of the entire wage bill to cover the occupational risk of our sector exceeds any insurance logic. It is the equivalent of paying an extra salary for every 10. It would be better for our companies to invest this amount in fixed income and, in the event of an accident, give the money to the worker instead of paying the ‘tithe’ required to the BSE”, they assure from the sector.
In that sense, they also claim that this excessive bonus is applied to all employees equally within the sector. “It is imposed on all personnel of the fishing, from a deckhand to an office administrator whose occupational risks are, evidently, very different,” they explain.
