“Left alone”: According to a study, children normalize abuse on the Internet

If children surf the Internet alone, it can be dangerous. Adults should be there.

This is one result of the “VOICE Project” study, initiated by the child protection organizations Terre des Hommes Netherlands, ECPAT and Eurochild. At a press conference on Wednesday morning, ECPAT Austria warned: Sexual exploitation of minors on the Internet is increasing.

A total of 483 children and 6,618 carers – including parents – from Europe, Asia and South America expressed their feelings about the safety of minors on the Internet in the project. In this country, 39 young people between the ages of twelve and 17 dealt with the topic of online security in focus groups, and 508 adult Austrians were surveyed electronically.
