China calls on NATO to abandon prejudice

The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) must abandon ideological prejudices and do more to maintain international as well as regional security. This was announced on December 21 in the press service of the PRC Foreign Ministry.

“As the largest military alliance in the world, NATO must abandon the Cold War mentality and ideological prejudices, make more efforts to help maintain international and regional security and stability,” the ministry told RIA Novosti.

In addition, the Chinese Foreign Ministry opposed the US deployment of ground-based medium-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe.

The ministry noted China’s commitment to the defensive nature of national policy, as well as the non-use of nuclear weapons. The Foreign Ministry also reminded that China has never deployed nuclear weapons outside its borders, and also “did not provide a” nuclear umbrella “to other countries.”

The Chinese side has repeatedly voiced its attitude on the issue of medium-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, the ministry concluded.

Earlier, Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about NATO’s activity. Thus, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov said that the situation for Russia had really worsened due to the actions of NATO. According to him, proceeding from the logic of the development of events, there is a risk of a repeat of the Cuban missile crisis.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that if Ukraine is admitted to NATO, this country could be deployed with weapons that threaten Russia.

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published projects on Russian security guarantees from the United States and NATO. In particular, the documents propose to enshrine the parties’ obligation not to create conditions that can be regarded as a threat.

Also, NATO countries should exclude Ukraine from joining the alliance and further expansion.

On December 20, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko indicated that Moscow would respond proportionately if NATO strike forces were deployed. He also expressed concerns about the disruption of military contacts between Russia and the United States, which are needed to work together to improve mechanisms to avoid unintended military incidents.
