The government reached an agreement with USA to advance joint work in the development of new technologies, which includes areas such as Artificial intelligence (AI), green energy, cybersecurity and biotechnology.
The agreement, which was sealed in the middle of joint exercises in the country of the security forces of Uruguay and of USA., was signed by the chancellor Omar Paganini and the Undersecretary of International Trade of the Department of Commerce, Marisa Lago.
After the signing, Paganini highlighted the path taken by the country in the area of renewable energy and insisted on “taking a new step in the second energy transition, with the development of the green hydrogen and its derivatives”.
At the same time, he considered that biotechnology is “an emerging area where Uruguay “It has significant potential due to its scientific community, but it has the challenge of turning it into an economically thriving sector.”
“This bond is of high importance because we share the values of democracy and the freedom, and we are in a context where accelerated technological change raises new issues on the table in which we can cooperate and collaborate,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs said.
At the same time, he reviewed that the United States “is our main market and a lot of technology from USA here” and highlighted: “Being able to sign this highlights an issue that is strategic for us, which is how to be more competitive in terms of our technological ecosystem.”
One more step in the good relationship between Uruguay and the United States
After the event, in which the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining also participated, Elisa Facio, The governments of both nations took a step forward in bilateral and multilateral collaboration on the main critical and emerging technologies, after the gestures in the surprising meeting between the president Luis Lacalle Pou and his pair Joe Biden in June 2023, as well as the efforts of Paganini himself last February, within the framework of the Annual Bilateral Interministerial Dialogue.
The agreement includes the identification of opportunities to support the development and use of relevant international standards for technologies and promote interoperability and compatibility globally with them.
“The agreement demonstrates the commitment shared by the two countries to the advancement of innovation, sustainability and economic opportunities, as well as to increasing trade. In this way, we will seek to increase cooperation and outline a concrete path to advance the development and deployment of certain critical and emerging technologies,” the Foreign Ministry said.
In the coming weeks, both countries will determine the specific collaborative activities that both countries intend to carry out to support the development and implementation of an action plan on opportunities for cutting-edge technologies (HIGH).
