Moscow announced interaction with Ankara on the situation in northern Syria

The Russian President’s special envoy for the Syrian settlement, Alexander Lavrentyev, said that Moscow is closely negotiating with Ankara to resolve the situation in northern Turkey. He made the corresponding statement on Tuesday, December 21.

“We are working very closely with our Turkish colleagues to rectify the situation in the north, in the northwest. [Сирии]… Of course, not all commitments by the Turkish side have been fulfilled, but we see their active desire to facilitate this process, ”Lavrentyev said at the talks in Nur-Sultan.

He noted that he sees the prerequisites for the implementation of the agreements between Moscow and Ankara on Idlib, to which the presidents of Turkey and Russia came on March 5, 2020.

Earlier, on December 6, the military of Russia and Turkey conducted another successful joint patrol in the province of Haseke near the city of Kamyshli in northeastern Syria, according to the agreement between the Presidents of the Russian Federation and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Sochi in 2019.

The press service of the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Russian convoy, which included armored vehicles “Tiger”, “Typhoon” and armored personnel carriers, drove to the meeting point with the Turkish military a few tens of kilometers from the base to patrol the northeastern regions of Trans-Euphrates. The patrol along the entire route was accompanied by Russian Ka-52 and Mi-8 helicopters. In total, the convoy covered 50 km in 1.5 hours.

On December 3, the Ministry of Defense reported that the military police of the Russian Federation in Syria conducted psychological training exercises with their Syrian colleagues on a special obstacle course in the Aleppo province in the immediate vicinity of the Idlib de-escalation zone.

On March 5, 2020, at a meeting in Moscow, the presidents of Russia and Turkey reached an agreement on Idlib, according to which the countries agreed to introduce a ceasefire from midnight on March 6 on the existing contact line in Syrian Idlib, agreed to create a security corridor on the Latakaya-Aleppo highway, and also conduct joint patrols in Idlib from Trumba Ain al-Hawra.
