With Marlene Engelhorn, the wi(e)so association brought an exciting speaker to the Oberndorf event center on Wednesday. As a descendant of BASF founder Friedrich Engelhorn, the 32-year-old Viennese inherited a fortune worth millions and believes it is an injustice that she is not taxed for it. That’s why she wants to give away a large part of her inheritance. A randomly composed citizens’ council should decide who, independent of Engelhorn. “I haven’t worked a day for my inheritance and I don’t pay a cent for it. Finally tax me!” she says.
Engelhorn, who wrote a book about her concerns and co-founded the AG Tax Justice Initiative, took an hour and a half in Oberndorf, moderated by Christian Aichmayr, to discuss the fair political distribution of wealth with the audience. Some visitors said they would like to see Engelhorn in politics – which is currently not part of the heiress’ agenda. Now she’s giving away her fortune and explaining why.
