It happened on the third descent: On the officially signposted mountain bike trail “Wiesel” on the Pfenningberg (616 meters) near Linz, a mountain biker from Urfahr fell heavily on Thursday afternoon. The man probably broke his collarbone in the fall and was no longer able to descend into the valley on his own.
Because the man had fallen in the impassable terrain, the Linz mountain rescue service was alerted and four members were deployed. Using a mountain stretcher, they brought the injured man to the street, where the Samaritan Association and the emergency doctor were waiting for him.
“The cycling season has now officially begun for us,” says Alexander Seemann, local branch manager of the Linz Mountain Rescue Service. Since the very first operation in April 2019, there have been repeated serious cycling accidents around Linz’s local mountains, requiring mountain rescuers – all experienced and well-trained alpinists – to respond. The last time there was a nighttime operation on Gründberg was in November of the previous year.
