The actual birthday of the Südbahnhofmarkt is in December, and there are two days to choose from. The first market day was held on December 5th, 1949, but the market only officially opened a few days later on December 14th. A lot has changed since then. Every new booth operator leaves his mark on the market. According to city councilor Doris Lang-Mayerhofer (VP), the secret of success is the industry mix, the mixture of retail, crafts and gastronomy.

The traditional market is also the most modern in Linz. Since 2023, visitors have been able to use an app to find out whether the individual booths are currently open or which suppliers are currently advertising their goods. A digital guidance system helps customers orientate themselves and goods ordered online can be picked up at a pickup station.
