The government launched a plan to promote the circular economy and reduce emissions

The government launched the National Circular Economy Strategya plan that seeks to promote the circular economy and reduce waste and carbon dioxide emissions, and which aims to be the basis of a State policy on industrial sustainability.

Last Thursday, the Executive Branch presented a document that includes various lines of action to advance a process of optimization of natural resources, and is born from joint work between the Ministry of Environment (MA)he Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF)he Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) and the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM)also counting on contributions from the academy, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the private sector.

The head of the MIEM, Elisa Facio, pointed out that this strategy will improve efficiency in the use of natural resources, through actions aimed at production and consumption. In turn, he highlighted it as a tool capable of “preserving the value of materials”, attracting investors, improving competitiveness and generating employment.

Along the same lines, the MIEM undersecretary, Walter Verrihighlighted the leadership of the State in the matter, and the initiative of Uruguay for promoting the green economy, the transformation of the energy matrix and the comprehensive national waste law.

The circular economy allows us to reduce up to 90% of industrial waste

For his part, the Undersecretary of the MA, Gerardo Amarillamaintained that the circular economy implies “hope” to restore nature, since according to the United Nations Environment Program, it allows reducing up to 90% of industrial waste.

To finish, the interim minister of MGAP, Juan Ignacio Buffastated that this national plan arose, among other things, from the need to generate resilience in productive systems and diversify the income matrix.
