Luckily – one almost has to say – the promotion train for SPG Wels in the regional football league had already stopped before today’s derby against Gurten due to a twelve-point deficit. Otherwise, the club from the trade fair city would probably have been even more upset by the Bundesliga’s refusal to grant approval for the second highest division in the first instance.
The curious reason for the refusal: of all things, a ten-year-old paragraph from a building permit for the Wimpassing sports complex became a stumbling block. This states that loudspeaker announcements in the stadium are only permitted until 9:30 p.m. However, according to gaming regulations, they should be allowed until 11 p.m.
“We and the city of Wels will do everything we can to submit the document to be amended to the Austrian Bundesliga, but unfortunately we cannot influence legal deadlines,” says Wels club manager Peter Huliak.
