Town meeting is 70,000 signatures away from achieving authorization for the plebiscite for a “fair debt”which seeks a solution through constitutional means to the situation of over-indebtedness that half of the population of Uruguay. With two weeks left until the legal deadline, will they achieve their goal?

The senator and leader of Town meeting who, in addition, is emerging as the only candidate for the presidential elections for the party, Guido Manini Ríosstated that the initiative promoted after the debt restructuring of individuals will fail in Parliament It is close to reaching 200,000 “effective and controlled signatures so that there are no repetitions and they coincide with the credential.” “There are about 70, 80,000 more signatures that we have to collect in these 15 days,” he added, in dialogue with Telemundo.

The limit to gather the necessary 270,000 adhesions – 10% of the electoral roll – to enable the plebiscite is April 27, six months before the October national elections are held. Days ago, Town meeting launched a campaign in which the militants were asked to “redouble the effort”, when 100,000 signatures were still missing, but considering that during March they had only added 20,000 new companions to the popular consultation initiative

“Militancy has intensified actions these days throughout the country, in all places where people gather, such as fairs and exhibitions,” stated Manini Ríos in that sense. For this, a telephone number was also set up so that people interested in signing can call and be told the closest place to access the ballot or, in some cases, it can be taken to their homes.

“There are many people who have shown interest in signing, people who see that this is an opportunity to end this situation of abuse that so many thousands of Uruguayans have been suffering for so long. We hope to reach the signatures before April 27 and the game is being played these days,” added Manini Ríos.

Does Cabildo Abierto arrive with the signatures?

Despite the optimism that the leader of Town meeting, The truth is that getting 70,000 signatures in 15 days could be something, in principle, very difficult to achieve for the structure supporter, that could remain like this without the plebiscite that seeks to generate changes in the Finance system and put limits on usury of banks and finance companies.

This is because, in the last two weeks, they managed to gather around 30,000 new adhesions. And now, in the same period of time, they must reach more than double that number of signatures. Although it is true that in April they improved their performance in the campaign compared to March, the times do not seem to be working in favor of the lobbying initiative; which, in addition, faces another great plebiscite campaign: the constitutional reform on social security by the PIT-CNT.

Failure to obtain the necessary signatures is something that is also already considered within Town meeting, despite the fact that in their speech towards militancy and citizenship, they still insist on the possibility of achieving “a golden opportunity” to put an end to “the very harsh conditions imposed by lenders.”
