From Tuesday, a hood and gloves will replace sunbathing

Anyone who went for a walk early on Sunday got a foretaste: it won’t get any warmer, at least in the next ten days. The maximum temperatures are a maximum of eleven degrees, but usually settle between six and nine. There will also be an unpleasant mix of rain, wind and snowfall in higher regions.

“We switch directly from thinking about summer to thinking about gloves and a hat,” says Josef Haslhofer, meteorologist at GeoSphere Austria (formerly ZAMG). And that’s exactly what it looks like: On Monday the weather changes sustainably. But there is still time to prepare: temperatures of up to 20 degrees will prevail until midday, then a cold front will put an end to the fun. Rain showers will spread across Upper Austria in the afternoon, and thunderstorms could also be present in the southern mountains.

On Tuesday The frost line is still at 1300 meters above sea level and temperatures fall to the seasonal average of up to 14 degrees. “With the wind, which can reach up to 60km/h, it feels significantly cooler,” says Haslhofer. There are also dense clouds and constant rain.

From Wednesday Late winter is finally back: the snowfall line drops to 800 meters above sea level, above which it will snow again and again – sometimes heavily. “In the Mühlviertel, for example in Kirchschlag, Sandl or Liebenau, the snow will at least remain on the roofs,” says Haslhofer. At higher altitudes there is widespread frost, but in lowlands the risk is rather low. “A light morning frost is not completely ruled out,” says the meteorologist.

Until Saturday From an altitude of 1500 meters up to 40 centimeters of fresh snow accumulates. And that’s not all. “It’s a longer phase that will stay with us beyond the weekend. It remains cool, rainy and windy below average,” says Haslhofer. So once again you can rely on the unreliability of April.
