The winter tire requirement ends tomorrow

Now it’s time to change tires again!

April is known for its sudden changes in the weather, it said in a release. For safety reasons, it is only recommended to change when it is actually warmer for a longer period of time.

“In principle, there is nothing wrong with changing the plug before April 15th,” said ÖAMTC technician Steffan Kerbl. “But you should always keep an eye on the weather forecast, because you should only really change them if it is consistently warm and you have not planned a trip to the mountains, for example. Summer tires should be used on winter roads, regardless of the date namely, nothing is lost.”

Winter tires not suitable for summer

But why change the plug at all? According to the ÖAMTC, winter tires are designed for the cold season and have some weaknesses in warm temperatures. For example, this can lead to a longer braking distance or increased wear. Driving behavior can also suffer.

If you want to save yourself the hassle of changing tires, choose all-weather or all-season tires. “Whether all-season tires are a good and safe option depends on the individual situation. There are good all-season tires – but compared to summer and winter tires, they are always a compromise. If, for example, you tend to travel in urban areas all year round, this is definitely possible be an alternative,” explained the tire expert.

Tire replacement by an expert is advisable

In principle, the ÖAMTC advises against changing tires yourself. If you still want to do it yourself, there are a few points you should keep in mind. “First and foremost, you should inspect each individual tire in detail for external damage and cracks. Checking the tread depth should be generous, because the tire properties deteriorate from just four millimeters. In addition, the 1.6 millimeter minimum tread depth still applies at the end of the summer season.” said Kerbl. When changing in the workshop or at a car club base, the tires are carefully checked and checked by experts.

Modern cars that have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) also require the system to be recalibrated. The ÖAMTC recommended that you have this done in a specialist workshop or a support center even if you change your tires yourself.

Proper storage is important

Proper storage is important for maintaining tire quality. Ideally, the tires should be hung on the wall or on a rim tree – in a dark, cool and dry place. It is also advisable to mark the tires with chalk according to their last vehicle position, e.g. B. “VR” for the front right or “HL” for the rear left. “After around 10,000 kilometers, the tires should be changed axle by axle. The right front tire should be mounted on the right rear, the left front belongs on the left rear. This way the tires are worn evenly,” explained Kerbl.
