Prince Edward (60), the youngest brother of King Charles III, takes on the role in the prestigious regiment. (75), as Buckingham Palace announced late Saturday evening.
The Duke of Edinburgh, as Edward is officially known, praised his predecessor for his “extensive knowledge and keen understanding of the regiment” and as a “tireless and passionate advocate”.
On his last day in office, the Duke of Kent, who is also called Prince Edward and is the oldest member of the Royal Family, wanted to take part in the Scots Guards’ Black Sunday in London today. Every year, the regiment remembers its fallen soldiers and their families on Remembrance Day.
The Duke is best known as the long-time patron of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament. In this role he presented the trophies to the winners. In 2021 he handed over this office to Princess Kate, the wife of heir to the throne Prince William.
The Scots Guards is one of the King’s five body regiments. Founded in 1642, the force fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, both world wars and the Falklands War, and also saw action in the Northern Irish Civil War, Afghanistan and Iraq.
