From an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level, the two were able to climb further with their touring skis. They reached the almost 3,000 meter high summit in the late morning via the challenging and steep Torstein ice channel.

The 47-year-old skied down the steep gully. He fell around 300 meters. His 47-year-old companion, who had decided to descend on foot, was almost swept away. He gave the unconscious injured person first aid and notified the emergency services. The 49-year-old was rescued by rope and flown to the Salzburg State Hospital, according to the police. His companion was able to return to the valley independently.

Hiker crashed

There was also an incident on the Katrin on Sunday. A 69-year-old woman from Lower Austria was traveling with her daughter from the mountain station on the marked, but currently closed, hiking trail towards Elferkogel. Around midday, the woman slipped on a loose stone, lost her balance and fell about ten meters over rough terrain.

The 69-year-old was taken to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Bad Ischl by emergency medical helicopter.
