He wouldn’t say he’s a morning person, even if the OÖN interview scheduled for 9 a.m. might look like it. He usually starts working at this time, says Thomas Brezina. “I have a rhythm, but not a strict one. It helps me to really achieve what I want to achieve.” On April 30th, the 61-year-old author of hundreds of children’s and adult books can be seen with his stage show “Love, Laugh, Do Differently” in the Kürnberghalle Leonding. A conversation about life, joy and writing.
As a passionate storyteller, what brought you to stage shows?
Whether I tell the stories as a book or directly to an audience, it is still storytelling. Doing this in front of an audience is a completely different level because I can speak to people virtually face to face. Because it is very direct. Because I feel the reactions. Because I can express and tell some things very differently and I want to pass on these instructions for a life full of joy. I want to entertain people as well as inspire and empower them.
The program is called “Love, Laugh, Do Differently.” How can we understand doing things differently?
The question is simple: Do we want to stay stuck where we are or do we want to see new possibilities? The world consists of many doors and it is up to us to choose which ones we want to go through. As I said, it is a guide to a life full of joy.
Do you find your life a joy?
Yes, I am eternally grateful for my life. A life full of joy is a fulfilled life. That doesn’t mean that it’s always joyful that I’ve been spared from blows of fate, from sad moments, from disappointments. But my life is fulfilled because I have always looked at what I want to do, what I want to fulfill it with. And I have learned to make something of what comes our way every day and to deal with it more joyfully and better.
In a time of many crisis-like situations that affect us from outside, do we now need even more of your guidance to make us aware of how well we are doing in contrast to others?
Yes, that’s why I’m doing this program now. Because I’ve talked about it many times on social media and in books. But now I just told myself how great it was to put together a whole evening. When everything around us works and runs well, you think that’s how it always is. But it’s not always like that. The art of life is to deal with what comes our way – and it’s very challenging at the moment – and not let it get you down.
So you haven’t lost hope yet?
Certainly not. It is now our top task to clearly maintain the confidence to focus on how much is possible and how much each and every one of us can create around ourselves.
