He former president of the Republic, Julio María Sanguinettishowed his regret for the “critical” situation that exists in Middle East after the drone attack Iran to Israel last Saturday, an offensive that would trigger a large-scale conflict in the region.

The former president regretted the “dramatic” context in which the region was involved and the “classic” confrontation between Israel and “some Muslim countries”, especially those of the Shia branchor Shiite Islam.

This Sunday, Sanguinetti assured at a press conference that there is “a confrontation in two directions”, one is the confrontation of Israel with some countries of the Arab world, and the other that of the “Shia and Sunni confrontation“, the two main branches of Islam.

“They were the two triggers for this, when Israel after arranging (peace) with United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Moroccoand started a conversation with Saudi Arabiawhich is, let’s say, the Sunni capital, that’s where Iran touch the button and launch Hamas“said the veteran leader of the Colorado Party (PC).

Sanguinetti explained that “very strong rivalry and confrontations occur here,” but maintained that he maintains his confidence that the conflict “can be managed” and “does not escalate.”

“Let’s hope it’s not the beginning of something bigger,” said Manini Ríos.

Along the same lines, the senator and presidential candidate for Cabildo Abierto (CA), Guido Manini Ríosstated at a press conference that he hopes that this escalation of tensions is not “the beginning of something bigger that involves more nations in the world,” and that “in short, we are always going to be affected no matter how far away we are.”

“Let us hope that sanity prevails among the leaders and that they rise to the occasion and the times we live in,” said Manini Ríos before adding: “We condemn, of course, the Iranian aggression against Israel“.

Asked about whether Israel should respond to the Iranian attack, the retired military officer reflected: “If civilians are going to die and ultimately the damage is much more general than what the war objectives could be, let’s hope that talks prevail and that there are no types of actions here that generate that type of death.”
