Ebrard acknowledged that this growth has been “enormous” so that both the Mexican government and the United Nations are supporting COMAR so that it can reduce the time to resolve requests.

He explained that their main needs are to have more personnel and a budget, a request that must be resolved by the government, meanwhile the Foreign Ministry will help channel the support of UN bodies such as UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.

The official stressed that Mexico is one of the countries where the procedure to process a refuge is “simpler.”

“More than 95% are granted, except when there is a criminal record, which is very few, all the others do authorize them,” highlighted Ebrard.

The foreign minister insisted, on the other hand, that it is not possible to accept the request of representatives of the so-called migrant caravans, currently passing through Mexico City, to grant free transit through Mexican territory to the thousands of migrants who want to reach the United States. .

“It is not a matter of voluntarism, it is a matter of which the law establishes it. It is not foreseen that free transit to any person be done at the discretion of an official,” Ebrard underlined.

The mobility of migrants entering through the southern border of Mexico has not stopped despite a road accident on December 9 that claimed the lives of 56 undocumented immigrants, mainly from Guatemala.

This tragedy occurred after the reactivation of a controversial United States program that forces migrants to wait in Mexico for the response to their asylum applications in the neighboring nation.

More than 190,000 people without papers have been detected in Mexico between January and September, triple the number in 2020. Some 74,300 have been deported.
