“Letters from beyond,” which promise that a boy who disappeared 27 years ago will soon reappear, lead Inspector Ingo Thiel to a long-ago case involving his predecessor, ex-inspector Dennert (Manfred Zapatka), in the crime thriller of the same name. Who is the sender and why does he feed the hope of the desperate parents?
The case leads deep into human depths, to a father that one would not wish on his greatest enemy. A violent wolf in sheep’s clothing who has made his own daughter an accomplice in the murder of her boyfriend.
The plot touches on pretty much everything that shocks the mind: from abuse to ice-cold violence to homophobia, the episode looks into the depths of humanity.
A dark, depressing case that even Thiel struggles with (Heino Ferch with a serious expression and furrowed brow). At least the episode is reminiscent of the old cultural technique of writing letters in the age of social media. DNA evidence via WhatsApp? That doesn’t exist yet.
