The avalanche that surprised a group from the Netherlands last Thursday was 180 meters long and 80 meters wide. The total of 17 tourers traveled together with four mountain guides from Austria from Vent in the Ötztal towards Martin-Busch-Hütte. The avalanche danger was classified as moderate (level two on the five-level scale), but the mild temperatures increased the risk of gliding and loose snow avalanches over the course of the day.
Finally, it self-triggered on a steep slope, four ski tourers were buried up to four meters deep, three of them died under the masses of snow. At this time, 15 mountain rescuers from the Bad Ischl local office were also in Vent, but fortunately they were far away from the scene of the accident. They had chosen the Martin-Busch-Hütte as a stopover for a training course that day, but changed their mind at short notice and stayed in the valley. “When we found out about the accident here in Bad Ischl, we were of course worried. “But fortunately the all-clear came quite quickly,” says Bernhard Schmid, deputy regional manager of the mountain rescue service and member of the Bad Ischl local office.
The Bad Ischl mountain rescuers also offered their help in Vent, but no one was sent to the scene because of the still prevailing danger of avalanches. “Our thoughts are with the relatives who are now having to go through so much,” says Schmid.
