In view of the Middle East conflict, students from the Franziskus-Gymnasium in Wels spend a whole semester studying the works of Jewish and Palestinian authors and engaging creatively with the works. “The world ‘out there’ is in turmoil. This doesn’t leave us indifferent as teachers and we also have the feeling in our classes that the global political situation is keeping children and young people busy and worried,” says German professor Simone Wallner.
Based on the reading experiences, the windows in the school building are artistically designed, and there is also a diverse supporting program: Israeli-Arabic cooking was carried out together with Charlotte Herman, President of the Israelite Cultural Community in Linz. The students attend taster language courses in Hebrew and Arabic and the journalist and author Vladimir Vertlib works with the young people in a workshop on extremist prejudices and overcoming them. “Peace education is an important component of Franciscan values and openness to new forms of learning is also very important to us,” says director Elisabeth Schoberleitner.
German professor Julia Hörtenhuemer adds that school must be a place where current world events take place and also give students space to create awareness and gain orientation.
