Russian President Vladimir Putin and French leader Emmanuel Macron held telephone talks. This was reported by the Kremlin press service.
“The discussion of issues of strengthening stability and security on the European continent was continued. In this context, priority attention is paid to the draft agreements between Russia and the United States on security guarantees and an agreement on security measures for Russia and NATO member states, which were handed over to the relevant addressees, including the French side, and then published, ”the statement says.
They also discussed the settlement of the internal Ukrainian conflict and Kiev’s unwillingness to comply with the Minsk agreements. The Russian President stressed that the possibility of holding a new summit in the Normandy format depends on the specific steps of the Kiev authorities.
Among other things, the heads of state expressed satisfaction with the stabilization of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. It is noted that Russia and France will act synchronously in these matters.
In addition, Putin drew attention to the restrictions to which the Russia Today news channel is subject. The Russian leader expressed his hope that the channel will be provided with the same opportunities to work without discrimination that are provided to the French media in Russia.
Also, the President of the Russian Federation congratulated his colleague on his birthday, the leaders exchanged good wishes on the eve of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Earlier on December 21, the European Union assessed Russia’s proposals on security guarantees. According to the representative of the European Commission Peter Stano, the EU should be at the negotiating table, where it will be about European security.
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. As follows from the documents, in particular, the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. According to a White House source, the US presidential administration found some of the proposals useful and others unacceptable.
On December 14, Putin and Macron also held telephone talks. The parties discussed the situation around Ukraine, as well as on the border of Belarus with the EU countries. During the conversation, the Russian leader gave specific examples of Kiev’s violation of the Minsk agreements.
