Some 5,500 people registered at the last minute to obtain the credential

On Monday there were long lines at the Electoral Court offices and the day lasted until midnight, something that caught the attention of the authorities.

Some 5,500 people registered at the last minute to get the civic credential for the first time last Monday, on a day in which long lines were generated at the offices of the Electoral Courtspecially in Montevideoand where the working hours were extended until midnight, to the surprise of the authorities of the state agency.

He Minister of the Electoral Court, José Garchitorenaassured Channel 10 that the figure at the country level caught the attention of the authorities, since over the weekend the Electoral Court had worked with special hours, and on both Saturday and Sunday, just over 1,000 people had signed up.

The majority of these citizens were young people, some even 17 years old, although adults also registered to access the document for the first time, the majority in Montevideo.

These new voters will be enabled to vote in the next elections 2024 October, but not in the internal onessince at the beginning of the month the Electoral Court carried out the fictitious closure of the registry for this instance.

Likewise, the Electoral Court reported that For interdepartmental transfers there will be a deadline until the 30th of the current monthand that there is no deadline for the renewal of the credential, and it can be done the day before the election, inclusive.

There are more than 2.7 million Uruguayans authorized to vote

Looking ahead to internal elections, the Electoral Court announced that there are some 2,766,323 citizens who will be able to vote on June 30. Until the beginning of the month, the number of new registrations was 228,270, while the initial objective was 249,496 people.

From this figure arises the 10% of those registered in the National Civic Registry who are necessary as signatories for the authorization of plebiscites in the country.
