Menopause is a very bad mood of nature,” says German bestselling author Ildiko von Kürthy. She has made this phase in a woman’s life the central theme of her current novel “Half an Eternity.” The target group she is addressing is large : Because half of humanity is affected – sooner or later – by the consequences of menopause.
Approximately one in three women suffer from the ups and downs of their hormones.

“The most common symptoms are irregular menstrual cycles, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disorders, mood swings and reduced desire,” says Lukas Angleitner-Boubenizek, head of the gynecology and obstetrics department at the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Clinic in Steyr.
The problem with weight
Many women also complain that it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain or even lose weight after the age of 45. “Exercise is essential in this phase,” says Martina Voglsam, senior dietitian at the Steyr Clinic. A varied diet that specifically includes foods rich in protein, calcium and vitamin D also strengthens your bones. This is important to counteract the increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
- Protein-rich foods help build or maintain muscle mass. Good sources are dairy products, fatty fish such as herring, sardines, mackerel as well as almonds, hazelnuts, sesame and legumes (beans, peas, lentils).
- Vitamin D: The best way to get the sunshine vitamin in spring and summer is to do as much physical activity as possible in the fresh air. You can get an exact answer to your own vitamin D levels after a simple blood test. Based on these values, the family doctor determines the further necessary steps.
- Green tea contains polyphenols and phytoestrogens and is therefore often included in soothing tea blends for the gentle but effective relief of various menopausal symptoms.
- Lots of vegetables and saladbest prepared with various herbs, spices and high-quality omega-3-rich oils. Two portions of fruit every day, whole-grain bread, whole-grain pasta, brown rice or oatmeal provide fiber-rich carbohydrates and fill you up.
