For Rendi-Wagner it is certain that an omicron wave will come: “The only decisive question is when and with what force it will hit us.” Only a third vaccination can protect.
A minimum interval of four months between the second and third immunization is currently recommended in Austria. Rendi, however, advises considering shortening it to three months “in order to be able to protect as many people as possible against illness from the large omicron wave”. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is already planning a corresponding possibility.
What bothers Rendi-Wagner is that there is no central Austria-wide overview of the Omikron spread. That must change quickly: “Rapid sequencing according to uniform standards also enables a quick and targeted response,” says the SPÖ chairwoman, who calls for an Austria-wide network to analyze suspected Omikron cases.
