Despite stabilization, half of the walls of the stock exchange collapsed, a fire department spokesman said on Thursday afternoon. Hours earlier, emergency services had tried to save the walls after the devastating fire at the old stock exchange in Copenhagen by setting up containers of concrete blocks connected to scaffolding around the building.
Tourist attraction fell victim to flames
It was initially unclear whether people were injured in the crash. The building, which was built 400 years ago, is located on the eastern tip of the island of Slotsholmen on the Holmens Canal opposite the Danish National Bank and is a tourist attraction. A destructive fire broke out there on Tuesday. The fire raged particularly badly in the part of the building that was scaffolded for restoration work and was closer to Parliament. Due to restoration work, the entire building was scaffolded.
After the fire, only the exterior walls of the affected side of the historic building remained. Before emergency services could stabilize the walls from the inside, which would have been necessary to save them, all rubble and other debris from the floor of the building had to be removed on Friday.
